Met Gala 2023: The Best Looks!

Updated: May 16, 2023

The first Monday of May presents one of fashions most important events, the Met Gala – the biggest walks of life from Hollywood movie stars, superstar musicians, influencers, nepo babies and more, all attend New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art for an exclusive charity event organised by Anna Wintour, in dazzling tailored gowns provided by the biggest designers in the industry.

Like any gala, a theme is in place for the attendees. This year paid homage to the late German fashion designer, Karl Lagerfeld who’s best known for holding the creative director position at Chanel up until his death. His impact and legacy can be seen across most fashion houses, with his innovative designs and his ability to go against the status quo, and some of the stars did a great job in honouring that. Here are some of my favourites – and in my opinion the ones who did it best:

Bridal Beauty: Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa served Disney princess realness in vintage 1992 Autumn/Winter Chanel corset gown - a true testament to the late designer. The piece was originally worn Claudia Schiffer. And instead of choosing to wear the top white hat as seen in the original fashion show, Lipa wears her hair down with an outstanding $10 million jewellery piece from Tiffany and Co. The eye-catching diamond necklace is over 100 carats and for sure was the perfect accessory to top the gown with.

Sexy and Sophisticated: Anne Hathaway

The Devil Wears Prada star, and Versace’s newest muse, Anne Hathaway came dripped in beautiful white and gold details to honour Lagerfeld. With the help of Donatella Versace, the stunning actress presented herself in an ensemble of tweed, pearl accents and camellia flower details. A rather elegant look with major leg slit going down the whole gown, held together by safety pins. When asked how it was to collaborate with Donatella she quoted “I just do what Donatella tells me to, very gratefully. She sent me the sketch and I just went ‘Well, alright!’’’. I mean let’s be real, I wouldn’t oppose to anything she says either! And she sure did a great job.

A Tweed Twist:

By FAR my favourite look of the night, is this Thom Browne Lagerfeld-interpreted piece, worn by Wilhelmina model, Sora Choi. In my opinion, this was the most on-theme outfit of the night; a two-piece ruffled tweed check cape falling over a suit-like gown. This piece was featured in US Vogue’s recent cover shot in Paris, prior to the Met. Ten designers came together to create the tribute to Lagerfeld’s legacy.
