Here is a list of some of the most underrated European foods you might not know about!


Borscht (Ukraine)


Borscht is a soup dish originated from Ukraine, made primarily with red beetroots which gives the dish a distinctive dark red colour. The soup is known for its sweet and sour taste, and made from meat or bone stock, fermented beetroot juice and sautéed vegetables.



Cacciucco (Tuscany)

Cacciucco is a seafood based stew, mainly using the ingredients of fish and shellfish – traditionally, there will be five different kinds of fish used, one for each ‘c’ in cacciucco. A wide range of ingredients can be used in the broth, ranging from vegetables to wine, with traditional chefs also adding a stone from the sea into the dish.



Sarmale (Romania)


Sarmale, which are also simply known as Romanian cabbage rolls, is made from pieces of cabbage that are rolled and stuffed with various fillings and are known as Romania’s most traditional dish. Pickled cabbage leaves are usually used to create a sour taste, and filled with pork, rice, and onion, with fresh herbs and spices.




Coquilles St-Jacques (France)


Coquilles St-Jacques are king scallops cooked and prepared in a specific French way, with the scallop served in its shell. Once the scallop is cooked, it is served with a creamy white sauce made from wine and milk. This dish is commonly served as a starter in France, and even has its own national holiday on May 16th.



Haggis (Scotland)

The most famous food from Scotland, haggis, is a savoury dessert made from a sheep’s ‘pluck’ (heart, liver and lungs), onion, oatmeal, stock and spices. Traditionally, the mixture will be encased in the animal’s stomach. Although its description can sound off putting, it is said to have an amazing savoury taste.



Blini (Russia)


Blini is an Eastern European, specifically Russian, pancake served with caviar, butter, tvorog (cream cheese), and smetana (sour cream). Their creation comes from an old Slavic tradition of worshipping the Spring season by eating pancakes, which represent the sun.
